Ilaiyaraja adds his iconic touch to ‘Stranger Things’ theme

New Delhi, May 25 (Representative) Legendary Indian composer Ilaiyaraaja has brought a unique rendition to the iconic “Stranger Things” opening theme song as a special treat for fans as season 4 premiers on May 27. On behalf of Netflix India, the critically acclaimed composer, singer, and lyricist has made the track significantly richer, darker and haunting creating an altogether new iteration of the theme. Seen battling the elements of the Upside Down through the use of a whole choir, Ilaiyaraja uses progressive and classical rhythmic structures, orchestration, chords, fusion of the original theme with western classical and Indian classical and showcases a harmonic and melodic shift between genres creating a powerful and fearsome theme. The official Instagram handle of Netflix India shared the video and captioned it, “MAESTRO ILAIYARAAJA’S VERSION OF THE STRANGER THINGS THEME HAS TURNED OUR WORLD UPSIDE DOWN! Stranger Things is coming soon in Tamil and Telugu (sic).” Since its launch over six years ago, Stranger Things has emerged as a global icon in the world of horror and mystery for its spellbinding plot, relatable characters and its homage to the classic 1980s nostalgia. The series soundtrack which perfectly captures the 80s sound has captivated fans and added to its fandom globally. Essentially a sound of dread and elevated heartbeats and anxiety being played on a synth with 80s production, the sound is both retro and yet new and the theme has become an instantly recognized favourite among fans. They are left wanting for more with unique theme perfectly capturing the atmosphere and mood of the series. As season 4 is on the verge of release, the music maestro’s theme perfectly celebrates the show.
