Suspected carrier of gold smuggling racket abducted at gunpoint in Kerala

Kozhikode, Jul 13 (Agency) In yet another incident linked with the gangsters of the Karipur-based gold smuggling racket, a Koduvally native has been abducted at gunpoint point by a group of men after barging into his house on Tuesday morning. Police sources said the 37-year Ashraf of Oorallur near Koduvally is a frequent flyer to Gulf countries. The Kozhikode Rural SP has constituted a special investigation team to probe into the incident. Sources said Ashraf is a known carrier and part of the Koduvally-based smuggling racket and had returned from Gulf a month ago.

Ashraf was arrested for smuggling yellow metal from Qatar in 2015, sources pointed out. Police suspects that the abduction must have been by gangsters in the smuggling racket. There has been a series of arrests and related crimes exposed after five men in the racket were killed in a road in Ramanattukara near here late last month. The investigation has been pointing accusing fingers on connections of the smugglers and gangsters with few activists of the DYFI, the Youth wing of the ruling CPI(M).
