Madras HC directs rights activist to approach SC in harassment case

Chennai, June 9 (FN Bureau) The Madras High Court has directed human rightsactivist Dr.Saravanan Karuppasaamy alias Dr.S.K.Saamy to approach theSupreme Court in a case filed by him seeking action against the CB-CID police officers in a harassment case. In his plea, Dr Saamy had contended that CB-CID police had foisted falsecases against him, tortured and harassed him in the name of investigation. Dr Sammy said “he is the Chairman cum Editor in Chief of the duly registeredlaw firm World Human Rights Commission and Rescue Centre (Akila Ulaga Manitha Urimaikal Padhukappu Aanaiyam).

He said in connection with the 2008 violent incidents at Dr.Ambedkar LawCollege, Chennai and the High Court clashes in 2009 incidents, he had filedseveral complaints before the National Human Rights Commission and alsoin the Supreme Court seeking action against the erring police officials. In order to curb his public welfare activities, the CB-CID registered false casesagainst him and beat and harassed him, he said, adding, following this he movedthe High Court to order a CBI inquiry to investigate the cases registered againsthim also to direct the CB-CID police to return several lakhs worth properties seizedby the police. He also prayed the Court to direct the Tamil Nadu Government to initiate appropriatecriminal action against the police officers.

Passing orders on his plea, Justice S.M.Subramaniam said “the National HumanRights Commission, after investigating the petitioner complaint against the CB-CID police officers, has ordered the Tamil Nadu government to pay compensation to thepetitioner and take criminal action against the police officers. Accordingly, on November 17 last year the State Government had paid Rs.15,000as compensation as awarded by the NHRC. Dr Saamy also filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the chargesheetsfiled against him. The petitioner has also filed a Supreme Court order clearly stating that hehas proved his innocence. The Judge said therefore, the petitioner is at liberty to approach the Supreme Court or the Criminal Courts to seek appropriate relief against the CB-CID officers who have filed a false case and harassed him.
