J&K Police arrests 3 with 50 Kg medicinal herbs

Srinagar, June 27 (Bureau) J&K Police on Monday claimed to have arrested three persons along with 50 Kilograms of endangered medicinal herbs in Handwara. Police in a statement said on Sunday, during a naka checking at Lach, Qalamabad in north Kashmirs’ Kupwra district stopped a vehicle with three persons. On search of the vehicle 50 kgs of endangered medicinal herbs Trillium Govanianum (Locally known as Tri Patri) was recovered from them. The trio were identified as, Shafiq Ahmad Khan, Reyaz Ahmad Khan both residents of Mankal and Jameel Ahmad Mir ,a resident of Check Sanzipora.

Trillium govanianum Wall. ex D. Don (Family Trilliaceae) is a threatened medicinal plant of the Himalayan region that has much therapeutic value. It is also known as Himalayan trillium or Nagchhatri with important phytoconstituents named as steroid saponins which are extensively used in the pharmaceutical industry. The root extract of plants has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antifungal and wound healing properties, they said. A case has been registered in Police Station Qalamabad and investigation initiated, police added.
