CBI arrests a Central GST Commissioner, a middleman in an alleged bribery case

New Delhi, Sep 29 (FN Agency) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a Commissioner (Appeals) in Central GST and CE posted at Guwahati and a middleman (private person) in an alleged bribery case. A case was registered against Commissioner identified as Raju Shaktivel and three middlemen on a complaint. It was alleged that the complainant executed construction work related to N.F. Railway and raised bills.

The Additional Commissioner in Central Goods & Service Tax at Dibrugarh raised a demand of Service Tax amounting to Rs 48,43,034, CBI in a statement stated. Aggrieved with the order of Additional Commissioner, the Complainant preferred an appeal before the Commissioner against the adjudication order. It was further alleged that during one of the hearings of the said appeal, the Commissioner allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 4,50,000 (10 percent of the demand of Service Tax) through middlemen, which was further negotiated to Rs 3.83 lakh to settle the matter, it stated. CBI laid a trap and caught a middleman while accepting an alleged bribe of Rs 3.83 lakh on behalf of said Commissioner. Later the said Commissioner was also caught, it added. Searches were conducted at the premises of the accused which led to recovery of incriminating materials.
