3 war criminals get death penalty in B’desh

Dhaka, May 19 (Agency) The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Thursday sentenced three Razakars of Baralekha in Moulvibazar in Bangladesh to death in a case filed over crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971. A three-member Bench headed by Chairman Justice Md Shahinur Islam passed the order. The other members of the Bench are Justice Abu Ahmed Jomadar and Justice K M Hafizul Alam. The death row convicts are Abdul Aziz alias Habul, his brother Md Abdul Matin and Abdul Mannan alias Monai. Of them, Abdul Matin is on the run. The ICT started the investigation against the three on October 16, 2014 and ended it on November 14, 2016.

The three were charged with five crimes against humanity such as murder, genocide, rape and torture in Barlekha area during the Liberation War. When the Liberation War started, Abdul Aziz and Abdul Matin allegedly went to Barpunji in India for training. Without completing the training, they returned to then East Pakistan and joined the Razakar forces which fought on the side of the Pakistani military against guerrillas seeking to form an independent Bangladesh.
