Srinagar, Jan 7 (Agency) As Kashmir region is bracing for nearly a week long wet spell, the night temperatures improved a bit in the valley. As per the latest forecast, there is a possibility of snowfall over higher reaches from Saturday evening. The Meteorological Centre here said Srinagar which was in the grip of severe cold witnessed a low of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius Friday night against last night’s minus 5.5°C that was coldest so far during this season so far. The night temperature at the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, was recorded at minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, a drop from minus 2.4 degrees Celsius recorded on Thursday.
Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district recorded night temperature at minus 2.8 degrees Celsius. Qazigund, the gateway town to the Valley, recorded a minimum of minus 1.6 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag town registered a low of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius.Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded minus 1.8 degrees Celsius.Jammu recorded a low of 5.0°C against 3.7°C on the previous night.Leh in Ladakh recorded a low of minus 10.8°C, the weather officials said. The weather department has predicted a wet spell from this evening across Jammu and Kashmir.
The Meteorological department in Srinagar said the wet spell may begin from this evening “There is a possibility of snowfall over higher reaches from this evening,” MeT officials said. On January 8 and 9,light to moderate snowfall and rain in plains of Jammu is predicted . The weather is likely to remain cloudy for two days from January 10. “ On January 12-13, widespread moderate snowfall/rain in plains of Jammu with heavy snowfall over higher reaches is predicted,” the MeT said. The MeT has issued an advisory and said that very likely the wet weather may affect surface transportation during January 8 and 9 and Air transportation during January 12-13.
