India’s merchandise exports rise 23 pc in June, trade deficit zooms to $ 26.18 billion

New Delhi, July 14 (Mayank Nigam) Driven by petroleum products, electronic goods, textiles and gems & jewellery among other items, India’s merchandise exports in June 2022 rose 23.52% to $40.13 billion as compared to $32.49 billion in June 2021. According to data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Thursday, merchandise imports in June 2022 were $ 66.31 billion, a jump of 57.55% over imports of $42.09 billion in June 2021. The merchandise trade deficit in June 2022 stood at $26.18 billion as against $9.60 billion in June 2021. Non-petroleum and non-gems & jewellery exports in June 2022 were $27.94 billion, registering a positive growth of 8.65 per cent over non-petroleum and non-gems & jewellery exports of $25.71 billion in June 2021. The trade data showed non-petroleum, non-gems & jewellery (gold, silver & precious metals) imports were $38.53 billion in June 2022 with a positive growth of 38.30% over non-petroleum, non-gems & jewellery imports of $27.86 billion in June 2021.

India’s overall exports (merchandise and services combined) in June 2022 are estimated to be $64.91 billion, exhibiting a positive growth of 22.95% over the same period last year. The overall imports in June 2022 are estimated to be $82.42 billion, exhibiting a positive growth of 55.72% over the same period last year. As per the latest trade data, exports of petroleum products grew 119% year-on-year in June to $8.65 billion. Electronic goods exports rose 61% to $1.67 billion during this period. Similarly, exports of readymade garments surged 50% year-on-year to $1.5 billion in June 2022. Engineering goods exports posted a positive growth of 3% year-on-year to $ 9.57 billion in June. Among the major import items, petroleum, crude & products almost doubled to $21.3 billion in June 2022 as compared to $10.67 billion in June 2021. Gold imports spiked 183% year-on-year to $2.74 billion in June 2022. Coal, coke & briquettes imports jumped 260% year-on -year in June 2022 to $ 6.76 billion.
