Banks should be courteous to the wife while recovering the loan of her husband’s died due to covid: Neelam

Mumbai, Oct 18 (Agency) Before or after covid, many people took home loans, motor loans, two wheeler loans or other loans from cooperative banks or credit institutions. Meanwhile, many borrowers have unfortunately died of covid during the covid period. Due to the death of the family head, the heirs have faced many difficulties in repaying this loan. There are many complaints that the said co-operative banks and co-operative credit societies are harassing the widows of these borrowers in various ways for loan repayment, said Maharashtra Legislative Council Deputy Chairman Dr Neelam Gorhe.

She said that In this regard, with the efforts of Udayakal Foundation and social activist Heramb Kulkarni, by collecting information about the complaints of more than one hundred and eighty single women from different parts of Maharashtra, and same was brought to the attention of the Deputy Chairman. Social and financial loss has been caused by the death of the said widower. Their source of income is gone. However, these co-operative banks and co-operative credit societies are harassing the borrower’s heirs, especially widows, in various ways regarding loan repayment, she said in a statement here today. Subsequent, these widows have not signed as co-borrowers or guarantors anywhere while sanctioning this loan. Various organizations have received complaints of banks harassing them over phone or in person when they are already distressed by the death of their husbands.

Therefore, all the cooperative banks and credit institutions should give clear instructions that they should treat the borrowers’ families courteously and not harass them in any way during loan recovery said Gorhe while directing to the Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Cooperatives, Ministry today. Gorhe has also asked the question according to which provision and law is being done by the wife who is not even employed and is employed even though she is not a co-borrower. She has drawn the attention of the state government in this regard . She also said that these women should be treated with humanity and kindness.
