Accolades galore for ‘Black Sand’, honored with 12 national and international awards

Kochi, Jun 22 (Representative) Within just three months of its censorship, ‘Black Sand,’ the Oscar-selected Documentary directed by Dr. Sohan Roy, has created a buzz in the national and international film festival circuits. The Documentary was appreciated and recognized at major international film festivals across London, Singapore, Paris, and the Czech Republic. It was also honored with awards at the mainstream film festivals from India.

These include Crimson Horizon Film Festival, the Calcutta International Film Festival, and the Tagore International Film Festival. After its Oscar contention, ‘Black Sand’ received the ‘Best Documentary Award’ at the London-based ‘Best Film Awards.’ It also won the ‘Nature Documentary’ award and garnered international attention. This was followed by a series of wins at the LAG D’Or International Art House Film Festival, Rajasthan Film Festival, Calcutta International Film Festival, World Film Carnival in Singapore, Tagore International Film Festival, Nawada International Film Festival, Prague International Film Festival in the Czech Republic. Black Sand narrates the shocking reality and the aftermath of Black sand mining on the people living in the coastal area of Alappad, Kerala. Director Sohan Roy is elated by the dream-like response and recognition the Documentary has received. He said that the recognitions show that they have succeeded in bringing the true picture of the current deplorable state of life of people living in the region to the international audience. “This Documentary provides viewers with a comprehensive view of the Alappuzha sand mining.

The film details the history of mining, the chronology of the agitation in the area, its various political, economic, and social perspectives, scientific analysis, and practical ways to solve this problem permanently. Though several videos have been made on this subject, most of them have a neutral stance. These achievements are proof of the fact that we have been able to carry out the task of honestly reaching out to the people behind this controversy,” he added. The Documentary is produced by Abhini Sohan Roy. Research and Screenplay is done by Harikumar Adiyodil. Background music is provided by renowned music director Bijuram. The Documentary was edited by Johnson Iringol, and Tinu Basil Paul handled the camera. Mahesh Ravindran, Bijin K, and Arun VP dealt with editing, coloring, and graphics. Arun Sugathan and Lakshmi Atul are the executive producers of the Documentary. The animations were created by Aries Epic, Released in English and Malayalam, the film is translated by Neha Nair and Mrinalini RI.
