Los Angeles, Jan 17 (Representative) Tennis legend Pam Shriver has shared the heartbreaking news that most of her trophies were stolen after she was forced to flee the deadly Los Angeles wildfires. The 21-time grand slam doubles champion has been staying at a Marina del Rey hotel in California after evacuating from her home in Brentwood. The 62-year-old filled her car with personal belongings, which included her trophies, and had it parked in the hotel parking lot. She took to social media on Friday (AEST) to reveal her car had been stolen from the parking lot and her trophies were gone. “My son (and) I are at a police station reporting our car was stolen from the hotel parking lot we evacuated to when fires started,” Shriver wrote on X. “This was the car that had most of my major trophies being stored until we could safely move back home.” ESPN reported that Shriver’s car, a Dodge Durango Hellcat, contained “five US Open trophies, five French Open plates and one Australian Open trophy”.
Throughout her illustrious career Shriver won 21 major trophies in doubles and mixed doubles in the 1980s and 90s, according to a News.com.au report on Friday. Shriver was set to travel to the Australian Open but cancelled her trip as fires broke out in the Los Angeles area. The tennis icon is the coach of 18th seeded Donna Vekic. Without her coach by her side the Croatian star has reached the fourth round.Shriver isn’t the only high-profile American missing from this year’s Australian Open with Jim Courier also not venturing Down Under due to the ongoing wildfires. The Age reported on Monday that Courier is still in America where the fires rage on.And while the report alleges Courier’s home was not impacted, the broadcaster has reportedly stayed in the area to support family and friends impacted by the disaster. Courier, who claimed two Australian Open titles during his playing days, is, however, expected to pick up his duties later in the tournament.
