Paris, May 24 (Representative) Danish teenager Holger Rune upset No.14 seed Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-1, 7-6(4) on his Roland-Garros main draw debut at Court 12 here on Tuesday. The 19-year-old is on a roll. Ranked 474 at the start of last year, he quickly graduated to a remarkable 40 in the world, riding high on a maiden title run in Munich a few weeks ago. Rune conceded a break to Shapovalov when he was serving for the match late in the third, but the Dane recovered to force a tiebreak and locked down the win on the two-hour mark. Rune will play Pedro Martinez or Henri Laaksonen in the second round. Meanwhile, World No.2 Daniil Medvedev raced through in the opening round at Roland-Garros, defeating Argentine lefty Facundo Bagnis 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 at Court Suzanne-Lenglen here on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old returned from a two-month break to recover from hernia surgery last week in Geneva and looked comfortable during his one-hour 38-minute victory over world No.103 Bagnis. Medvedev awaits the winner of the clash between Laslo Djere and Ricardas Berankis in the next round. In the women’s singles, 2017 champion Jelena Ostapenko smoked 38 winners in her 6-1, 6-3 demolition of Italian world No.73 Lucia Bronzetti. The Latvian No.13 seed trounced her rival in just 67 minutes to wrap up the victory. She will next face home favourite Alize Cornet, who defeated Japan’s Misaki Doi 6-2, 6-0 in under an hour. Australian Open runner-up Danielle Collins was also at her manic best in her 6-0, 6-4 victory against lucky loser Viktoriya Tomova. Collins, a quarter-finalist in Paris two years ago, converted 6/10 break points and struck 30 winners compared to just seven from Tomova. The American No.9 seed awaits Shelby Rogers or Tereza Martincova in round two.
