Melbourne, Dec 30 (FN Agency) India’s dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant found himself at the centre of discussions after his aggressive dismissal in the Melbourne Test, a moment that triggered India’s collapse and a 184-run defeat to Australia. Despite his intent to dominate, Pant’s risky approach has drawn mixed reactions, with skipper Rohit Sharma emphasising the need for balance. “There’s a thin line between intent and recklessness,” Rohit told reporters here on Monday. “Pant has won us games with his fearless batting, but he needs to find the right way to approach different situations.”
Pant’s dismissal marked a turning point as India slumped from 121/3 to 155 all out, conceding the series lead at 2-1. The loss puts added pressure on India ahead of the final Test in Sydney, with a series draw and ICC World Test Championship final hopes on the line. For Rohit Sharma, the defeat in Melbourne was particularly tough, both as a captain and as a batsman. With just 31 runs at an average of 6.2 in the series, Rohit admitted to falling short of expectations. “As a batsman and captain, this is disappointing,” he said. “But we can’t dwell on the past. There’s still a game to go, and we need to ensure we play to our potential in Sydney.” While the batsmen faltered, Jasprit Bumrah continued his stellar form, claiming nine wickets in Melbourne to surpass 200 Test scalps.
However, Bumrah’s heavy workload has raised concerns, with the pacer bowling 141.2 overs in the series—more than any other bowler.“We’re mindful of his workload,” Rohit assured. “He’s in great form, but we need to manage him carefully to ensure he remains fit and effective.” The final Test begins on January 3, and a win is essential for India to salvage the series. With questions around Pant’s approach, Rohit’s form, and the team’s reliance on Bumrah, India face a challenging but critical opportunity to level the series. “We need to regroup quickly and bring our best to Sydney,” Rohit concluded. “A drawn series would mean a lot after the setbacks we’ve faced.”
