New Delhi, June 26 (FN Agency) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday heaped praise on Tokyo Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra for his recent achievements and said “this determination is the identity of today’s youth.” During his monthly address to nation in ‘Mann Ki Baat’, PM said: “Our Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra was again in the headlines. Even after the Olympics, he is setting new records of success, one after the other. Neeraj won the silver at Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland. Not only that, he also broke the record of his own Javelin throw.”Chopra registered a best throw of 89.30m to break his own previous national record of 88.07m, which he had set at the Indian Grand Prix 3 in March last year.
His record throw, also his personal best, was also the fifth-best throw of the year so far.The event in Finland was Chopra’s first competition after winning the historic gold medal at Tokyo Olympics 2020 in August last year. Days after marking his return to competitive action with a national record at the Paavo Nurmi athletics meet, Tokyo Olympics champion Neeraj Chopra put on another impressive display to win the men’s javelin throw gold at the Kuortane Games in Finland.” Neeraj once again made the country proud by winning the gold in Kuortane Games. He won this gold in conditions when the weather there was inclement. This zest is the hallmark of today’s youth,” he added. In slippery conditions following some rain ahead of the event, Neeraj Chopra’s first throw measuring 86.69m was enough for him to clinch the top podium. PM also lauded Mithali Raj, who recently announced her retirement from cricket, and wished her good luck for the future.”
Just this month, she had announced her retirement from cricket which has emotionally moved many sports lovers. Mithali has not only been an extraordinary player, but has also been an inspiration to many players. She also scored 2364 runs in 89 T20Is, as well as 699 runs in 12 Tests, including a century and four half-centuries.Mithali captained India to the final of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017, and also holds the record for the most matches captained in Women’s World Cups, breaking Australian legend Belinda Clark’s record during the women’s World Cup 2022 in March.She also led India to four consecutive Asia Cup triumphs between 2005 and 2012.
