Madrid, July 9 (FN Bureau) The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) on Monday announced that women’s national team coach Montse Tome has signed a one-year contract extension until the end of the European Championships in Switzerland in August 2025. “It was an easy decision to make,” said Tome on the RFEF website, adding that she had “people working with me who help me stay focused on football.” “I am very grateful for the trust that has been shown in me and eager to start competing,” Tome said. Tome was assistant to former coach Jorge Vilda, who was sacked in the wake of former RFEF President Luis Rubiales’ unsolicited kiss on player Jenni Hermoso in the celebrations after Spain’s win in the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
Although some were doubtful of Tome’s appointment given her role under Vilda and Rubiales, she has led Spain to excellent results, with the team winning the UEFA Nations League and qualifying for the forthcoming Olympic Games, where they are favorites for the gold medal. Spain have also ensured their place at the 2025 European Championships with two matches left to play. “So far we have achieved our objectives: we have an excellent working group and players, and this makes everything easier,” said Tome.Spain’s next two games are away to the Czech Republic on July 12 and at home to Belgium four days later. Tome will use these games to decide on the players who will travel to the Olympic Games, where Spain face Nigeria, Japan and Brazil in the group stage.
