Leon (Spain), Sep 28 (Agency) India’s Martina Devi Maibam, 18, set two national records in the women’s +87kg event at the IWF Junior World Weightlifting Championships 2024 on Saturday. Maibam lifted a total of 237kg, comprising 101kg in the snatch and 136kg in the clean and jerk, to finish sixth. Her 136kg clean and jerk, along with the total lift of 237kg, broke two Indian senior national records. The previous total lift record (231kg) was held by Ann Mariya, who set it at the National Weightlifting Championships 2022. The previous clean and jerk record (128kg) belonged to Manpreet Kaur, while Purnima Pandey continues to hold the national snatch record (104kg) in the women’s +87kg category. Cuba’s Mariflex Sarria Ruiz topped the event with a total lift of 270kg, followed by Canada’s Etta Mae Love (254kg) and Brazil’s Taiane Justino de Lima (251kg).
Sarria Ruiz won gold in both the snatch (115kg) and clean and jerk (155kg). Brazil’s Justino de Lima (110kg) and Colombia’s Yairan Sofia Tysforod Rivas (110kg) won silver and bronze in snatch, while Canada’s Love (146kg) and Justino de Lima (141kg) followed in clean and jerk. A total of seven weightlifters competed in the women’s +87kg category.India fielded a nine-member team in the championship, comprising three men and six women. Dhanush Loganathan was the only Indian medallist, winning two bronze medals in the men’s 55kg category last week.
