Indian Railways lifts 38th Surjit Hockey trophy, beats Punjab & Sind bank by 3-1

Jalandhar, Oct 31 (Agency) Indian Railways Delhi clinched the title of 38th Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament by beating Punjab & Sind bank Delhi by 3-1 in the final of the tournament that played at the Army’s Katoch Astroturf Hockey Stadium Jalandhar Cantonment on Sunday evening. The final match played on a very fast note. In the first quarter’s 14th minute Indian Railway earned the first penalty corner, their Ajmer Singh sounded the board (1-0). In the very next minute Punjab & Sind bank equalized from the field goal by Maninderjeet Singh from the pass of Satbir Singh (1-1). In the 30th minute of the play Indian Railways earned a second penalty corner which Pardeep Singh scored (2-1).

In the last minute of the game Indian Railways Varinder Singh completed the tally with a field goal (3-1). Sports and Education Minister Pargat Singh gave away the prizes to the winners and runners up and other players who performed well during the nine day Surjit Singh Hockey Tournament. Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi was also introduced with the finalist teams before the start of the final match. Mr Channi also displayed his tinge for the game and during the ongoing final of the Surjit Hockey tournament and performed as a goal – keeper. The winners team was awarded a sum of Rs 5 lakhs and winners Trophy whereas the Runners Up bagged Rs 2 lakhs and Trophy. Pardeep Singh of Indian Railways declared best Player of the Tournament and awarded Rs 51000 cash in the memory of Mohinder Singh Tut. Gakhal Brothers gave Rs 11 Lakhs to Indian Men and Women Hockey teams. Indian Hockey Team members Rupinder Singh, Harmanpreet Singh, Hardik Singh, Mandeep Singh, Gurjant Singh and Shamsher Singh were also present on this occasion.
