Shanghai, April 27 (Agency) Indian archers displayed an exemplary performance at the Archery World Cup 2024 held here on Saturday, securing four out of five gold medals in the compound events, bolstering the nation’s position on the global archery stage. Led by Asian Games champion Jyothi Surekha Vennam rpt yothi Surekha Vennam, the Indian contingent delivered a stellar performance, with Vennam clinching the individual gold medal in women’s compound archery.In a nail-biting final, Vennam emerged victorious after a tense shoot-off, defeating Andrea Becerra of Mexico, the 2023 World Championship silver medalist. The match concluded with a tied score of 146 at the end of five sets, showcasing Vennam’s exceptional skill under pressure. Vennam’s triumph not only added another accolade to her decorated career but also secured her qualification for the prestigious Archery World Cup Finals scheduled to take place in Tlaxcala, Mexico, in October.
Despite some challenges faced by the Indian archers, including defending world champion Aditi Gopichandswamy’s loss in the quarterfinals and Priyansh’s silver medal finish in the men’s individual compound event, the overall performance was outstanding. In addition to individual achievements, the Indians dominated the compound team events, clinching gold medals in all three categories. Vennam, along with teammates Aditi Gopichand Swamy and Praneet Kaur, secured victory in the women’s compound team event, while Abhishek Verma, Priyansh, and Prithmesh Phuge emerged victorious in the men’s compound team event. Furthermore, Verma and Vennam combined forces to clinch gold in the mixed team event.
