Bengaluru, Aug 8 (Representative) It rained gold for India on the penultimate day of the 2022 Commonwealth Games as its athletes won five. India also won four silver and six bronze medals, taking the day’s tally to 15. Overall, India has won 55 medals and is placed fifth on the medal standings with 18 gold, 15 silver and 22 bronze. Boxer Nikhat Zareen, the reigning world champion, won a gold in women’s 50kg bout against Carly Mc Naul of Northern Ireland. Pugilists Nitu Ghanghas and Amit Panghal also won gold while Sagar Ahlawat won silver in the last event of the day. India also won a silver medal in the men’s 10k race walk and bronze in women’s javelin throw.
Veteran paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal and Sreeja Akula won gold in the mixed doubles table tennis. The former won his third medal in the ongoing Games. Sharath took his CWG gold medal tally to 6 and the overall medal tally to 12. The women’s hockey team won the bronze. Another gold medal winner was men’s triple jumper Eldhose Paul who became the first Indian to bag the yellow metal in the sport along with Abdulla Aboobacker, who bagged a silver to record India’s first ever one-two finish in triple jump.
The Indian women’s cricket team won silver in the T20 final after they lost to world champions Australia by 9 runs in an exciting match. In Badminton, Kidambi Shrikanth and doubles pair Pullela Gopichand and Jolly Treesa won bronze. Lakshya Sen and P V Sindhu will battle for gold in singles finals. Saurav Ghosal and Dipika Pallikal won their mixed doubles bronze medal by defeating Australians Lobban Donna and Pilley Cameron in straight sets 11-8, 11-4. New Zealand is just one gold ahead of India and is placed fourth on the medals’ table. Australia leads the table with 174 medals, followed by England with 166 and 91 for Canada.
