India clinch record 5th Asian Champions Trophy title

Hulunbuir, Sep 17 (FN Agency) In a thrilling final at the 2024 Asian Hockey Champions Trophy, India secured their fifth title by defeating hosts China 1-0 in a tense encounter. The decisive moment came in the 51st minute when Jugraj Singh netted the only goal of the match, sealing victory for the Men in Blue. Despite India dominating much of the play, China made it difficult for the defending champions with a solid defensive display. Both teams remained locked at 0-0 until the fourth quarter when Jugraj, unmarked inside the D, capitalised on a well-constructed attack to break the deadlock. His clinical finish ensured India held on to lift the trophy, extending their record as the most successful team in the tournament’s history.

Throughout the match, India applied constant pressure, particularly in the final quarter, where they increased their attacking intensity. However, China’s resolute defending, including key saves and clearances, kept India at bay for much of the game. The hosts also threatened with several penalty corners in the third quarter, but the Indian defence stood firm. China’s game plan of keeping numbers behind the ball proved effective in frustrating India’s usually potent attack, which had been prolific in the tournament, scoring 25 goals in 6 matches. Skipper Harmanpreet Singh, who entered the match as the top scorer with 8 goals, was denied the chance to add to his tally, but it was Jugraj’s moment of brilliance that made the difference. With this victory, India extend their dominance in the competition, having won the title previously in 2011, 2016, 2018, and 2023.
