Birmingham, July 3 (Representative) Jasprit Bumrah starred on rain-hit Day 2 as England were reduced to 84 for five at stumps, trailing India by 332 runs. The Indian skipper was involved in a 35 runs record carnage in an over off Stuart Broad and then scalping three wickets in the delayed fifth Test at Edgbaston here on Saturday. Jonny Bairstow and skipper Ben Stokes were batting on 12 and 0 respectively at stumps. India had scored 416 in their first innings after they were invited to bat first as overcast conditions prevailed on Day 1. India clearly dominated during the day. First, it was Ravindra Jadeja who got to his first overseas century (104) which was his third overall. After his departure, India’s tail plundered 78 in almost 12 overs, taking the total to 400-plus mark.
Bumrah the bowler struck immediately as England’s top-order worries continued, with Alex Lees losing his wicket first up. Zak Crawley fell in between the first and the second rain breaks, and Ollie Pope did not last long either. Root and Bairstow helped England recover with a 34 runs stand for the 4th wicket, but a Mohammad Siraj snorter broke the partnership, before Mohammad Shami snapped up nightwatchman Jack Leach for naught. Bumrah drew first blood off a lovely length ball directed at the stumps of Alex Lees (6) who missed on his defence. The ball sneaked through and deflected off his pad and rattled the timber behind. Shy of 17 runs overnight, Jadeja notched up his awaited milestone (104) just minutes ahead of the half-an-hour mark.
Following suit, Bumrah (31 no off 16 balls) got into the act and created a world record of smashing 35 runs in an over in a Test match off Stuart Broad, surpassing the previous in the hands of Brian Lara, George Bailey and Keshav Maharaj. It was only third Test hundred, and surely Jadeja’s best as he had walked into bat when India were in peril with just 98 runs on board with five wickets down on Day 1. The bowling-allrounder hit his first Test hundred in 2018 and since then he has scored 1,324 runs at an average of 49, just behind Rohit Sharma who has better average in this period. Jadeja stitched a 222-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Rishabh Pant who cracked 111 balls 146 runs to rescue India. The only glitch in his knock was when he flayed outside off-stump to Mathew Potts and nicked it, but the ball brushed Zak Crawley’s fingertips and sailed for a boundary.
England folded India’s first innings in 11.5 overs by picking up the remaining three wickets, but leaked 78 far too many runs. Jadeja and Shami began the Day 2 proceedings slowly before the centurion played a few shots to get going. Jadeja was cleaned up by James Anderson for 104 just before the second new ball, leaving India at 375 for 8. England believed that they would run through and restrict India below 400-mark, but Broad leaked 35 in an over, taking India past 400 runs. For England, the star bowler was Anderson who finished with figures of 5 for 60 runs and Potts 2 for 105. Brief scores: India 1st innings: 416 all out in 84.5 overs (Rishabh Pant 146, Ravindra Jadeja 104; James Anderson 5/60) England 1st innings: 84/5 in 27 overs (Joe Root 31; Jasprit Bumrah 3/35).
