Mumbai, Sep 20 (Agency) Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Nana Patole on Tuesday took a dig at the Narendra Modi government at the Centre, saying that the Women’s Reservation Bill introduced by the Modi government is yet another ‘jumla’. In a press statement issued here, he said that the Modi government has approved the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Cabinet meeting, and it will now be presented in the Lok Sabha. However, considering the BJP’s history, it looks like the Women’s bill too will turn out to be yet another election gimmick, he noted. Looking at the bill’s content, it appears to be nothing more than an event management, with no substantial provisions in it, he asserted.
Even if the Women’s Reservation Bill becomes a law, its implementation for the 2024 general elections seems unlikely, he said. The MPCC chief further stated that even if the Women’s Reservation Bill is approved in the special session of parliament, its implementation in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections does not seem feasible. Before implementing the 33 per cent women’s reservation in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, a census is necessary, he said and accused the Modi government of not conducting the one due in 2021 as yet. This law can potentially be enforced only after the delimitation of constituencies, which is now scheduled for 2026, he pointed. Looking at the current situation, the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill will not happen anytime soon, Patole added.
