Winners on an average received 47 pc of votes: Report

Lucknow, April 7(Agency) Winners of the just concluded assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh have on an average received 47 per cent of the votes polled, which is an increase of four pc over the previous assembly polls. Association for Democratic Reforms(ADR) and Uttar Pradesh Election Watch have analysed the vote share for all the 403 constituencies in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections, 2022 and this information was disclosed to the media here on Thursday. According to the report, the winners of the UP State Assembly elections, 2022 won by an average of 47 pc of total votes polled. In the 2017 elections winners won by an average of 43 pc of total votes polled. A total of 85 or 36 per cent winners won with 50 per cent and above of the total votes polled in their constituency while 149 or 64 per cent winners won with less than 50 per cent of the total votes polled in their constituency.

Altogether 51 or 25 per cent out of 205 winners with declared criminal cases won with a vote share of 50 per cent and above. A total of 103 or 28 per cent out of 366 crorepati winners won with a vote share of 50 per cent and above. Similarly 15 winners have won with a margin of victory of less than 1000 votes and eight winners have won with more than 40 per cent of margin of victory. The ADR report said 78 out of 205 winners with declared criminal cases have won against a runner up with a clean background. Among these 78 winners, three winners have won with more than 30 per cent margin of victory. Altogether 49 out of 366 crorepati winners have won against a non-crorepati runner up. Among these 49 winners, seven winners have won with more than 30 per cent margin of victory. Among the 403 winners, 47 are women and out of these 47 women winners, five have won with more than 20 per cent margin of victory.

Among the women winners, Anjula Singh Mahaur (BJP) from Hathras constituency has won with the highest vote share, i.e. 59 per cent. The report said that out of the total 209 re-elected winners, none have won with less than 35 per cent of vote share in their respective constituencies. A total of 64 or 31 per cent have won with more than 50 per cent of vote share. Altogether 92 or 44 per cent re-elected winners have won with less than 10 per cent victory margin whereas 17 have won with more than 30 per cent of margin of victory. The NOTA button instated by the ECI in 2013 gave the voters an option of rejecting all the candidates in their constituency. Out of 9,21,62,896 votes polled in UP Assembly, 2022, 6,37,304 (0.69 per cent) were polled for NOTA.
