Trade Unions in UT to hold demo on May 17 over closure of mills

Puducherry, May 13(Agency) All trade unions in the Union Territory will hold a demonstration in front of the legislative assembly here on May 17 to protest against the move of the NR Congress- BJP government to close down the Swadeshi and Bharathi Textile mills in Puducherry A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of all trade unions held here on Thursday evening. It was also decided to give representations of Chief Minister and Labour Minister to run the mills. It may be noted that the Swadeshi and Bharathi mills were functioning under the Union Textile ministry. Some time ago, the mills were handed over to the Puducherry government.

Even though, the mills were functioning it became sick as days passed. In 2020 the mill management advised the government close down the mills when trade unions moved the High court stating that there was no notice from the management and the HC set aside the recommendation of the management. In the meantime, the management of mills had remitted 60 percent of the workers’ financial benefit to their bank accounts and once again recommended to close down the mills by May 30. It is learnt that the government in UT had reportedly forwarded the recommendation of the managment to the Madras High Court with a request to pass order to close down the mills by May 30.
