Kolkata, July 11 (FN Representative) Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Monday demanded imposition of Article 355 in the state so that Central security forces can take charge to restore law and order situation of the state in the wake of so many killings in the three-tier panchayat elections. ” Although the situation in the state demands imposition of the President rule under Article 356,” citing of an example of alleged diverting of mid-day-meal’s funds for distributing blankets, Adhikari insisted that since the Mamata Banerjee government is an elected one ” we ( (BJP) would rather want her continue and defeat her government in the democratic process of election.” However, ” I would urge the governor in the state to exercise his power and recommend to the Union government to impose Article 355 and restore the law and order situation.” He said Manipur chief minister N Viren Singh did the same as he recommended to the Centre for imposition of Article 355 into his state. When asked if he would comment on Governor CV Ananda Bose’s visit to North Block and meet Union home minister Amit Shah on Monday evening, Adhikari declined to comment on the issue. He said he would urge the governor to recommend for Article 355 so that law and order situation was restored in the state. He said the governor himself visited several places across the state including North Bengal and he knew the ground reality of the state.

He welcomed the Supreme court order of the day upholding a Calcutta Court order that the CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED) would investigate the allegations against Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of chief minister Mamata Banerjee the alleged involvement of various crimes. The apex court on Monday declined to set aside the Calcutta High Court order allowing the CBI and Enforcement Directorate to question him in connection with their probe into the West Bengal teachers’ recruitment scam.
