Congress slams govt for not mentioning Indira Gandhi in celebrations of Bangladesh liberation war victory
New Delhi, Dec 16 (Representative) Congress on Thursday slammed the union government for trying to sideline the contribution of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as 50 years of Bangladesh liberation were celebrated. “The Congress party and Indira Gandhi ji played a significant role in liberation of Bangladesh. The Indian forces, in the leadership of Indira Gandhi ji divided Pakistan, and Bangladesh was liberated,” said Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge. “Bangladesh always remembers the contribution of Indira ji… Today some people want to forget Indira ji.
This government is overlooking her contribution. They celebrate the liberation day, but don’t mention which government, which PM fought the war,” Kharge said. He said India had taken 95,000 Pakistanis as prisoners of war. Former defence minister AK Antony had on Wednesday slammed the union government for not mentioning former prime minister Indira Gandhi in the year long celebration of 50 years of Bangladesh liberation war of 1971. He was speaking at a program organised by the Congress as the closing ceremony of the celebrations of the Bangladesh Liberation War, 1971. India has been celebrating year long ‘Swarnim Vijay Varsh’ to mark 50 years of the 1971 war.
