New Delhi, Nov 8 (Agency) Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday raised questions on demonetisation done by the Narendra Modi government in 2016, and asked why hasn’t corruption ended if it was successful. “If demonetisation was successful then why hasn’t corruption ended? Why didn’t the black money come back? Why hasn’t the economy gone cashless? Why didn’t terrorism hurt? Why is inflation not controlled?” the Congress leader said in a tweet. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh called it an “economic blunder”. “With every passing year, it’s becoming even more clear that 8.11.2016 will be marked in the world’s economic history among the worst policy blunders anywhere. Demonetisation along with rushed GST destroyed the backbone of the Indian economy—the MSME & informal sectors especially,” he said. The Congress party also launched an attack against the government, and in a series of tweets questioned the decision, blaming it for economic woes.
“Demonetisation was not a war against black money but against the poor and common citizens. Demonetisation failed in its target, Prime Minister should apologize to the countrymen for the failure of demonetisation,” Congress said in a tweet from its official twitter handle. “Demonetisation proved to be a failure to stop the flow of fake notes in the economy, the number of fake notes has increased after demonetisation. Demonetisation proved to be a mindless and imposed decision,” it said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced a ban on currency notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 on November 8, 2016. The government had said the measure was taken to check black money and corruption, and the Prime Minister and other ministers had said it would bring to an end terrorism and left wing extremism in the country.
