New Delhi, May 11 (Agency) Stepping up its attack on the BJP-led government in Manipur over the recent violence, the Congress on Thursday said the ruling dispensation has utterly “failed” to control the situation and demanded imposition of President’s Rule in the state. The party also posed volley of questions to the ruling BJP, besides demanding compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the family members of the deceased. Addressing a press conference at the Congress headquarters, party’s Manipur in-charge Bhakta Charan Das said,”. The BJP government has utterly failed to control the situation. If the law and order would have been there, definitely this would not happened.” “More than 40,000 people are affected. Over 70 people are officially declared dead. Around 20,000 people have been displaced from their homes and are living in camps,” he said. Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, Das said, “Why has the Union Home Minister not visited Manipur yet? Why has the Prime Minister not even issued an appeal for peace ? President’s Rule must be imposed in Manipur immediately. “He asked what measures has the Centre taken to restore peace and save the lives and properties of the people in Manipur.
Das also demanded immediate relief measures including, treatment of the injured, evacuation of those displaced from the camps, creating a safe space for communities to go back to their neighborhoods and homes. “We demand a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for family members of the deceased and appropriate amount of at least Rs 5 lakh for damaged homes, and long-term rehabilitation measures to restore livelihoods of those displaced,” the Congress leader said. Meanwhile, in an open letter addressed to the community members of the North Eastern State , Union Minister for Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju wrote, “It is with great sorrow that on behalf of the North East Member of Parliament Forum, we extend our deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in the unfortunate incidents that occurred in Manipur recently. The pain caused by the loss of lives and properties is irreplaceable, and our hearts go out to those who have been affected by these tragic events.” “We urge all members of the community to come together during these difficult times and work towards restoring peace and harmony in our society. Let us show our solidarity and support towards those who have been affected and work towards building a better tomorrow,” read the letter uploaded by Rijiju, who is also the Chairman of the Forum on social media on Thursday. It added, “We are committed to providing necessary assistance and support to all those who have been affected by these tragic events.”
