Chennai, Jan 28 (Agency) The Cyber Crime Wing of the Central Crime Branch police on Friday registered a First Information Report (FIR) against BJP functionary Vinoj P.Selvam for his recent twitter post, which was defamatory in nature and for spreading rumours.
A press release from the Officer of the Chennai City Police Commissioner said the FIR against Selvam, who is the Tamil Nadu Unit President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), was registered on a complaint from a city resident Elangovan and taken up for investigation. The complainant alleged that Selvam had posted defamatory content in his twitter handle recently and indulged in a campaign with an intent to create fear and hatred among the people, besides aimed at disturbing public peace. Cases under Secs 153 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 505(1)(b) (with intent to cause fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or against the public tranquility) and 505 (Statement conducing public mischief) of the IPC have been registered against him.
Chennai City Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal warned that stringent legal action will be taken against those trying to disturb public peace and create hatred in the name of religion by posting fake news or indulge in misinformation campaigns on social media platforms like facebook, twitter or WhatsApp.
