New Delhi, April 27 (Agency) The AIIMS Nurses’ Union on Tuesday decided to call off its indefinite strike hours after the Delhi High Court directed the institutes’ nurses to immediately rejoin the work. The directions from the apex court said that the nurses “must place the interest of patients above and beyond their dispute with the administration.” While the nurses union stalled the strike, it said that protest would continue through other modes. “It has been decided to call off the ongoing indefinite strike and continue the agitation and protest by other modes as the Delhi High Court directed to rejoin for duties,” a statement from the union read. “The AIIMS Nurses Union would like to thank each and every member for having shown our strength and support.
We promise you that we will continue this fight to resolve our genuine long-standing demands for the betterment of our members,” it added. The Nurses Union of the institute declared an indefinite strike on Monday after the AIIMS administration suspended union’s president Harish Kajila. The nurses union has demanded immediate revocation of Kajla’s suspension. On April 23, AIIMS witnessed a dispute between Kajla and the Resident Doctors’ Association. The nursing staff were protesting over the lack of manpower and late duty hours in the main operation theatre, which led to verbal clashes between both the bodies. However, the dispute resulted in suffering of the patients as many planned surgeries could not be conducted amid the altercation. Later, the AIIMS administration suspended Kajla on account of mis-behaviour and risking patients’ lives.
