New Delhi, July 17 (FN Agency) Congress MP from Assam, Abdul Khaleque has said the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is not possible in India. “Uniform Civil Code is not possible in India because it has a diversity of cultures, different tribes and religions. What are the modalities for UCC? First, you have to publish the draft. Then there may be some discussion,” Khaleque told UNI referring to the BJP-led government at the Centre. He further said, “In spite of that if you (government) want to go for UCC, it should be applicable for all. There should not be any exemption as it will make it meaningless. “Last month, the Congress slammed the ruling BJP after the Law Commission of India (LCI) sought views and ideas from the public and recognised religious organisations on the UCC, and said “it represents the government’s desperation for a legitimate justification of its continuing agenda of ‘polarisation’.
“This latest attempt represents the Narendra Modi government’s desperation for a legitimate justification of its continuing agenda of ‘polarisation’ and diversion from its glaring failures,” the party had said in a statement. Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Manipur situation, Khaleque said he should visit the strife-torn Northeastern state. “PM tweets on every matter. Till now PM did not appeal to the people of the state to maintain law and order. This is horrible. PM should visit Manipur,” Khaleque told UNI. Congress has been consistently questioning the silence of the PM on the prevailing situation in Manipur. Khaleque, who represents the Barpeta parliamentary constituency from Assam, also demanded the dismissal of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh for his alleged failure to control the situation.
“Biren Singh-led government in Manipur should be dismissed. This government has totally failed,” the MP said. The Congress has blamed the BJP-led government for the current crisis in Manipur. Khaleque also urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to send an all-party delegation to Manipur to take stock of the situation. “I appeal to the Lok Sabha Speaker to send an all-party team to Manipur to take stock of the situation,” he said. Earlier, the Congress had said, “We will demand a discussion in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha (on Manipur situation), and would like the PM to take Parliament and the country into confidence in this matter. “The Monsoon session of the Parliament will begin on July 20 and continue till August 11.
