UCC implementation would subvert Constitution: Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru, July 26 (Bureau) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday expressed concern that the implementation of Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would subvert the Constitution, democracy and secular values of India. ‘The Karnataka CM expressed concern that it would subvert the Constitution, democracy and secular values of India and take away the rights of tribals, Dalits and minorities,” tweeted the Chief Minister’s Office. The statement comes in the wake of All India Muslim Personal Law Board office-bearers meeting Siddaramaiah to discuss the implications of implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), and the conspiracy underlying it. “The state government will act to protect the rights of minorities, and there is no need to worry about this,” Siddaramaiah assured the delegates. The delegates said that the previous Law Commission had rejected the central government’s proposal saying implementation of UCC is unfeasible in this diverse country.

But, the central government has asked the present Law Commission to review the matter again, and accordingly the Law Commission is gathering public opinions, they added. Meanwhile speaking at the “Foundation of Better India”, Siddaramaiah alleged that the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after coming to power, ruined the country’s economy. He alleged that Modi raised the country’s debt to Rs 170 lakh crore by borrowing Rs 118 lakh crore in just 9 years. “The country’s debt for the last 75 years is only Rs 53 lakh crores. It is the infamous Prime Minister Modi and the BJP-RSS family who raised this debt to Rs 170 lakh crores,” the CM said. Congress is committed to the aspirations of the Constitution, and it has been constantly campaigning to uplift the lives of the poor of all castes like workers, women, dalits, shudras, backward and protect the rights of all these communities, Siddaramaiah said. “It is the Congress party that carries the legacy of social justice,” he added.

Siddaramaiah said the BJP family, which has never spoken about the problems of the farmers, labourers of this country, is trying to push the country back again by pushing the children of these farmer-labourers and students into the furnace of hatred. “I believe that the youth and students of this country will not allow this for any reason,” he said. Conspiracy politics to spread hatred is going on in the country while unemployment and poverty are increasing, Siddaramaiah alleged. “There is an attempt to undermine the foundation of humanity, secularism, scientific progress and development laid for India since Nehru’s time as Prime Minister. However, this convention will help to re-establish our India on the basis of democratic values,” he said. The Chief Minister said as unemployment in the country rises, the poor-middle class are harassed by price hikes and the politics of party hatred engulfs the country.”
