Bengaluru, Jan 6 (Agency) The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka during routine surveillance for respiratory viral pathogens. According to the Union Health Ministry, the cases were detected as part of ICMR’s ongoing monitoring of respiratory illnesses in India. Officials clarified that there has been no significant rise in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases in the state. The first case involves a 3-month-old female infant admitted to Bengaluru’s Baptist Hospital with bronchopneumonia. She was treated and subsequently discharged. The second case, detected on January 3 concerns an 8-month-old male infant, who is currently stable and recovering. Both cases were reported locally with no history of international travel.
ICMR is closely monitoring the circulation trends of HMPV, while the World Health Organisation (WHO) is providing updates on respiratory illnesses in China to support global public health efforts. Health experts have recommended precautionary measures, particularly for children and those with underlying health conditions. Parents have been urged to avoid sending unwell children to school and to use masks for those displaying respiratory symptoms. Globally, respiratory infections in China have been linked to HMPV, Covid-19 variants, and Influenza A. However, no genetic mutations suggesting a potential pandemic have been observed. HMPV is a common respiratory virus causing upper respiratory infections and has been circulating worldwide, including in India. Authorities have reiterated that early detection and precautionary measures remain key to mitigating its spread.
