Chitradurga (Karnataka), Sep 12 (Representative) SpaceFields, a startup incubated at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), has successfully tested India’s first aerospike rocket engine, marking a significant milestone in the country’s space technology development. The test took place at the IISc Propulsion Test Facility in Challakere, Chitradurga district, with engineers and scientists from SpaceFields gathered to witness the historic moment. The 168 mm aerospike engine underwent a static test, showcasing its potential to revolutionise rocket propulsion. After a brief period of instability, the engine achieved steady combustion, demonstrating its capability with a specially developed composite propellant. The engine reached a maximum pressure of 11 bar and generated a peak thrust of 2,000 Newtons, delivering a total impulse of 54,485.9 Newton-seconds—a critical measure of performance that validated the team’s hard work and innovative design.Built from Titanium Grade 5, known for its strength and resistance to extreme heat, the engine also incorporated SpaceFields’ patented thermal insulation to withstand the intense combustion temperatures.
This design reflects SpaceFields’ commitment to pushing the boundaries of rocket technology.Aerospike engines differ from traditional bell-shaped engines in their ability to adapt to varying atmospheric pressures, maintaining optimal efficiency across all altitudes. This adaptability eliminates the need for multiple stages in rockets, reducing fuel consumption and enhancing overall mission efficiency—a game-changing development for space exploration. The successful test positions SpaceFields as a leader in next-generation rocket technology, setting the stage for future advancements in India’s space capabilities. With the global space industry rapidly evolving, innovations like the aerospike engine are expected to improve the performance and cost-effectiveness of space missions, offering India a competitive advantage. This achievement underscores the growing collaboration between academia and industry in India, highlighting the role of startups like SpaceFields in driving technological innovation. As the company continues to refine its aerospike engine, the potential to revolutionise India’s approach to space exploration grows ever more tangible. This breakthrough paves the way for more efficient, affordable access to space and strengthens India’s position as a key player in the global space sector.
