Science & tech not effectively utilised in agriculture: Dr Soshamma

Thiruvananthapuram / New Delhi, Dec 24 (Agency) Advancements in science and technology are not being effectively utilised for the benefit of the agricultural sector, Padma Shri awardee Dr Soshamma opined. Inaugurating the National Farmers Day Celebration, the animal conservationist emphasised the need for the younger generation in Kerala to actively engage in agriculture, and society’s responsibility to recognise and value the contributions of farmers. The Farmers Day celebration included honouring farmers who demonstrated excellence in agriculture and individuals and organisations contributing significantly to the sector. Padma Shri Lakshmi Kuttyamma, a noted traditional medicine practitioner, in her keynote address, highlighted the importance of combating forest destruction and promoting health lifestyles close to nature. Kotukal Krishnakumar delivered the Farmers Day message, and SN Raghuchandran Nair, President of Thiruvananthapuram Chamber of Commerce and Industries, presided over the event.

The event was organised by Trivandrum Chamber of Commerce, Metro Mart, Executive Knowledge Lines, Abhijith Foundation, Center for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA), Federation of Indigenous Apiculturalists (FIA), and Citrine Hospitalities. An agricultural promotion fair was organised as part of various organisations showcasing their products and services. Additionally, seminars and lectures were conducted, including a presentation on ‘Small grains and diet’ by Dr Smita K P from Vellayani Agricultural College, a talk on ‘Habitate Honey for Health and Survival’ by Dr Stephen Devanesan from the State Apiculture Mission, and a lecture on ‘Challenges and Prospects in Agriculture’ by V Somasekaran Nair, retired Deputy Director from the Department of Agriculture. Prominent figures such as National award winner Parappi Amma, Executive Knowledge Lines Managing Director Siji Nair, Center for Innovation in Science and Social Action General Secretary Dr C Suresh Kumar, State Apiculture Mission Dr Stephen Devanesan, Thiruvananthapuram Chamber of Commerce and Industry Secretary Abraham Thomas actively participated in the event held on Saturday.
