New Delhi, Dec 14 (Bureau) In a fresh and latest recommendation to the Central government on Tuesday, the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dr Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud recommended the names of five High Court judges for appointment as Supreme Court judges. The Statement of the SC, said that the Supreme Court Collegium in its meeting held on December 13, 2022, has resolved to recommend elevation of the following Chief Justices/Judges of the High Courts, as Judges in the Supreme Court.If these recommendations are to be approved by the Centre, then the Supreme Court judges strength would rise to 33, one less than the sanctioned strength of 34. The five judges recommended, by the Supreme Court Collegium, to be appointed as Supreme Court judges are as follows:Justice Pankaj Mithal (Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court); Justice Sanjay Karol (Chief Justice of Patna High Court); Justice P V Sanjay Kumar (Chief Justice of Manipur High Court); Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah (Judge of Patna High Court); Justice Manoj Mishra (Judge of Allahabad High Court).The Collegium is composed of an expert of five members body; being headed by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dr Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chadrachud and four senior most judges of the Supreme Court — Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, S. Abdul Nazeer, K M Joseph and Mukesh R Shah, at present. Right now, the current strength of judges in the Supreme Court is 28, as against the sanctioned strength of 34. Justice Pankaj Mithal-Justice Pankaj Mithal is currently serving as the Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court. Previously, he served as the Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court. Justice Mithal, born on June 17, 1961, was Graduated in Commerce from Allahabad University in the year 1982 and passed L.L.B. from Meerut College, Meerut affiliated to Ch. Charan Singh University in the year 1985. He was enrolled as an advocate in Bar Council of U.P. in the Year 1985. Practised in the Allahabad High Court from 1985.
He will retire on attaining the age of 65, on, June 16, 2026, if he will be elevated to the SC as a judge. Justice Mithal worked as Standing Counsel, Uttar Pradesh Avas Evam Vikas Parishad Lucknow since 1990 till elevation to Bench and as Standing Counsel of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Agra since 1990 to February 2006. He was elevated as an Additional Judge on July 07, 2006. He took oath as permanent Judge on July 02, 2008. He was elevated as Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir High Court and took oath on Jan 04, 2021.Justice Sanjay Karol-Justice Sanjay Karol is currently the Chief Justice of Patna High Court. He is former Chief Justice of Tripura High Court.Justice Karol, born in Shimla on August 23, 1961, is an alumni of St. Edward School, Shimla in Himachal Pradesh. He Graduated with Honours in History from Government Degree College, Shimla. Obtained Degree in Law from H.P. University, Shimla. He will retire on August 22, 2026, if he will be elevated to the SC as a judge. He was enrolled as an Advocate in 1986. He practiced in various Courts, including the Supreme Court in Constitutional, Taxation, Corporate, Criminal and Civil matters. Appeared as Counsel in the Inter-State water Dispute (BBMB Project) in the Supreme Court. He was designated as a Senior Advocate in 1999. Remained on the Senior Panel for Central Government, Supreme Court. He discharged his Constitutional duties as the Advocate General (AG) of Himachal Pradesh from 1998 to 2003. He was elevated as a Judge of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh, on March, 08 2007. He was appointed as Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh with effect from April, 25, 2017.
He acted as Chairman of H.P. High Court Legal Services Committee. Discharged statutory duties as Executive Chairman of H.P. State Legal Services Authority and member of the Board of Governors, Himachal Pradesh Judicial Academy. He was appointed as the Chief Justice of High Court of Tripura on November, 09, 2018. Acted as Patron-in-Chief of Tripura State Legal Services Authority and Chairman of the Tripura Judicial Academy.Justice P V Sanjay Kumar-Justice PV Sanjay Kumar is at present serving as the Chief Justice of Manipur High Court. Prior to that he served as a judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court.Justice Kumar, was born on August 14, 1963. He did his graduation in Commerce from Nizam College, Hyderabad. Secured Law Degree from Delhi University in the year 1988. He was enrolled as a member on the rolls of the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh in August, 1988. Was attached to the office of his father and gained exposure to various branches of Law. Justice Kumar, was elevated to the Bench As Additional Judge, High Court of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad, on August, 08, 2008. He assumed charge as Permanent Judge of High Court of Andhra Pradesh on January 20, 2010. Transferred as a Judge of High Court of Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh and assumed charge as such on October 14, 2019. He took oath as the Chief Justice of High Court of Manipur on February 14, 2021. He will retire on August 13, 2028, if he will be elevated to the SC as a judge. Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah-Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah is presently the Judge of the Patna High Court. He has served at the Andhra Pradesh High Court before being transferred back to Patna, his parent High Court.Justice Amanullah was born on May 11, 1963. He pursued his B.Sc. (Hons.) (Chemistry) and LL.B.
He was enrolled with the Bihar State Bar Council on September, 1991. Practiced predominantly in Constitutional Courts, majorly in the Patna High Court; appeared intermittently in Supreme Court, Calcutta, Jharkhand and Delhi High Courts, in Constitutional, Civil, Criminal, Service, Co-operative, Taxation, Labour, Corporate, Forest matters; specialised in Constitutional and Service laws. If Justice Amanullah will be elevated to the Supreme Court as a judge, then he will retire on May 10, 2028. He was invited to address the IAS probationers at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie.Justice Amanullah served as Chairman, High Court Legal Services Committee, and Chairman, Juvenile Justice Monitoring Committee [Patna High Court]; and on the Board of Governors, Bihar Judicial Academy, Patna. He was elevated as Judge, Patna High Court on June, 20, 2011. Transferred to Andhra Pradesh High Court on October 10, 2021. Re-transferred to Patna High Court on 20th June, 2022.Justice Manoj Misra-Justice Manoj Misra, born on June 02, 1965, is at present a judge at the Allahabad High Court. He was elevated as an additional Judge on November 21, 2011 and was made a permanent judge on August 6, 2013. He will retire on attaining the age of 65, on June 01, 2027, if he will be elevated to the SC as a judge. Justice Misra was Graduated in Law from University of Allahabad in 1988. He was enrolled as an Advocate on December 12, 1988. He practised in Civil, Revenue, Criminal and Constitutional matters at Allahabad High Court.In the next one year, till December 2023, nine senior Supreme Court judges will retire.
