Rs 5000 cr invested for Mahakumbh infra overhaul

Locknow, Jan 29 (Representative) Indian Railways has committed over 5000 crore in infrastructure upgrades to accommodate the anticipated surge of pilgrims for Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, former Railway Board (Operations and Business Development) Member Ravinder Goyal announced. With an expected daily footfall of nearly one crore devotees, these investments aim to ensure a smooth, comfortable, and spiritually enriching experience for all attendees. Goyal shared that over the last two years, the Railways has focused on transforming stations into well-equipped, welcoming hubs for pilgrims. These enhancements include modern amenities such as sleeping pods, executive lounges, and retiring rooms, offering much-needed comfort to travellers. To facilitate smooth transit, the Railways has introduced colour-coded waiting lounges, clear directional markers, and specially designed tickets with foot indicators, making the journey easier for millions of visitors. In recognition of the increased demand, Indian Railways has also constructed 17 new permanent shelters, or Yatri Ashrayas, and added 48 new platforms. These measures have expanded station holding capacity from 21,000 to 1,10,000, significantly reducing congestion. Further improvements include upgraded toilets, drinking water stations, baby-feeding areas, and medical inspection rooms, all designed to meet the diverse needs of the pilgrims.

A reliable power supply and robust backup systems have been put in place to ensure uninterrupted services during the event. Goyal emphasised that inclusivity is a key priority for the Railways. Special Yatri Suvidha Kendras and assistance booths with wheelchair access, luggage trolleys, and other amenities have been set up at major stations such as Prayagraj Junction and Prayagraj Chheoki. As part of the ‘Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan’, the Railways has also significantly enhanced facilities for differently-abled individuals, including escalators, lifts, and accessible platforms. With its comprehensive approach, Indian Railways is setting a new benchmark for managing large-scale religious events. By combining modern infrastructure with a commitment to spiritual values, the Railways aims to ensure that the journey to the holy Sangam is as meaningful and comfortable as the destination itself. This ambitious project underscores Indian Railways’ dedication to both the logistical success and the spiritual fulfillment of pilgrims during Mahakumbh 2025.
