Reading language important for crafting rich literature: writer

Pune, Nov 27 (FN Agency) Lamenting about decline in reading habit among people particularly young generation, Dr Shobha Jain, writer, critic and head of Language Department at Indore College, on Sunday advocated for reading the language saying that it is important for crafting rich literature. Speaking at fourth edition of two-day Deccan Literature Festival here, she said, “In today’s era, our generation has learned to write. However, there is a noticeable decline in studying and indulging ourselves in reading literary genres across contemporary, ancient and modern works. If we do not read the language, we won’ t be able to create rich literature. And in order to let the literature prosper, our reading must take centre stage.”

“Whenever it comes to literature, I strongly feel that the existence of literature depends on the words. To call the words the life of the language, is a gift given to the words. Choosing the right words are extremely important in literature, and only then will the emotions reach us rightly,” she said. She further said, “Even if people start working on them (literary work), there is no gurantee that they would complete it. And even if they do, we do not know how much it would benefit the society.” Calling for every state to host such literature festivals, Dr Jain added that “if a language prospers, the society will prosper too.”
