Hyderabad, Feb 3 (Agency) Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) Minorities Department Chairman Shaik Abdullah Sohail on Thursday claimed that there was an overwhelming response to the digital membership drive of the party in the Old City of Hyderabad. Mr Sohail said that the membership drive was taken up in all 44 municipal divisions under Hyderabad Parliamentary constituency and there has been a tremendous response. “We’ve taken up the membership drive at the booth level with the aim of enrolling at least 100 members in each polling booth.
The entire cadre is actively working to achieve this target which will be achieved without much difficulty,” he said after participating in the membership drive in Kanchanbagh division of Chandrayangutta constituency. The Congress leader said that the people belonging to all sections of the society are joining the party. “While having interactions with the newly enrolled members, we realised that people in the Hyderabad constituency want a change in the leadership. They are vexed with the leadership of MIM which is not addressing their problems and confined itself to giving emotional speeches and controversial statements,” Mr Sohail said. He said a majority of members who joined the Congress party during the ongoing membership drive were jobless youth.
“Unemployment is a huge problem in the Old City. Lakhs of qualified youth are not getting a job. Most of them completed professional courses due to the 4 per cent Muslim reservation introduced by the previous Congress regime. But they are not getting suitable jobs. They are now joining the Congress party with the hope that they would get job opportunities if Congress returns to power in the next elections,” he said. The Congress leader said enrollers have been appointed for almost all the polling booths in Malakpet, Karwan, Gosha Mahal, Charminar, Yakutpura, Chandrayangutta and Bahadurpura. While the Congress party already had a strong presence in Gosha Mahal and Malakpet constituencies, the digital membership is going on at brisk pace in Charminar, Chandrayangutta, Bahadurpura, Karwan and Yakutpura Assembly segments.
Mr Sohail said constituency-wise details of membership would be disclosed at the end of membership drive and added that the TPCC Minorities Department has been actively participating in the membership drive across the state. He said special focus was laid on nearly 40 Assembly constituencies where the minority population was more than 20%. The Minorities Department Chairman said a majority of new members joining the Congress party were aged between 18-25 years and many of them are first time voters. The Congress leader said the overall response to the membership drive so far has given clear indications that the minority communities in Telangana would support the Congress party in the next elections.
