Lok Sabha Speaker Birla hands over P20 Presidency to Parliament of Brazil

New Delhi, Oct 14 (FN Agency) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla handed over the P20 Presidency to the Parliament of Brazil on Saturday after successfully concluding the Ninth P20 Presidency at Yashobhoomi in Delhi. The Lok Sabha Speaker handed over the presidency to the President of the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil, Authur Ceasar Pereira de Lira. Making the closing remarks in the valedictory ceremony of the P20 Summit, Birla said, “It is a great matter of pride that all the parliamentarians adopted the Joint Statement during the Summit of P20, which reflects the common commitment of the Parliaments.” The Lok Sabha Speaker said that in this two-day conference, the current global challenges were discussed. He added that it is important to consider how parliaments will work on the future roadmap to resolve these problems.

On the sidelines of the event, Om Birla also held talks with the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkiye and the Chairperson of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia, Valentina Matvienko. He also met with the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Duarte Pacheco. In a social media post, Birla said India and IPU are pursuing a common agenda of promoting and supporting democratic governance & building strong parliaments. He added that India has always played a vital role in maintaining world peace and the welfare of humanity. India hosted the two-day summit under the broader framework of India’s G20 presidency. In line with the theme of India’s G20 Presidency, the theme of the P20 Summit is Parliaments for One Earth, One Family, and One Future. During this two-day global event, 25 speakers, 10 Deputy Speakers, and 50 members of Parliament, among others, participated. The Pan African Parliament also participated in the G20 event for the first time in India.

The Summit hosted four high-level sessions, which included accelerating SDGs, sustainable energy transition, women-led development, and transformation in people’s lives through public digital platforms. A Parliamentary Forum was also organized on ‘LiFE’ (Lifestyle for Environment) as a pre-summit event to promote the adoption of sustainable lifestyles and sustainable patterns of production and consumption. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 9th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P20) on Friday. On the first day of the summit, the presiding officers unanimously adopted a joint statement that focused on promoting international peace, prosperity, and harmony through parliamentary diplomacy and dialogue. The presiding officers of the Parliament of G20 countries and invited nations congratulated India for passing Nari Shakti Vandana Adhiniyam and the New Parliament building.
