Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul undergoes successful gall bladder surgery

New Delhi, Feb 21(Agency) 64-year-old Justice Sanjay Krishan Kaul, the second most senior judge of Supreme Court, underwent an successful gall bladder surgery at Sir Ganga Ram (SGR) hospital in the capital on Tuesday, and he will likely to be discharged in a day or two, Dr Ajay Swaroop, Chairman of Board of Management of the SGR hospital, said. “Justice Kaul is stable now,” confirmed Dr Ajay Swaroop, Chairman of Board of Management of the hospital, of the SGR Hospital said. 64-year-old Justice Kaul was admitted to the hospital yesterday, after he had complained of abdomen pain. Scans were performed. A surgery was advised considering the number and size of stones. A team of doctors led by Dr Saumitra Rawat, Chairman and Head of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplant conducted the procedure through a laparoscope, the hospital said. Gall stones is a condition where calcified stone-like structures form inside the gall bladder, and cholecystitis is a sudden inflammation of the gall bladder. Both conditions can be immensely painful and in some cases life threatening even, a statement issued by SGR Hospital, said.

About 8 am on Tuesday, Justice Kaul was taken to the operation theatre for surgery. “The surgery took one hour,” said a hospital source. Chief Justice of India, Justice DY Chandrachud visited Justice Kaul at the hospital yesterday. Dr Swaroop added, “Justice Kaul’s condition is stable post-surgery. He is likely to be discharged in day or two, with the final decision by the doctors.” Justice Kaul had also served earlier as a former Chief Justice of Madras High Court and Punjab and Haryana High Court and former judge of Delhi High Court. Hospital authorities said that the 64-year-old was diagnosed with stones in the gall bladder, after which it was decided to conduct a minimally invasive surgery. Gall bladder surgery has been done this morning successfully. Justice Kaul, who was elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court on February 17, 2017 is set to retire on December 25, thus year.
