IMD predicts severe heatwave over East and South Peninsular India for next 2 days

New Delhi, May 2 (Representative) India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday predicted that heatwave to severe heatwave condition will continue to prevail over East India and South Peninsular India for the next two days and gradually improve thereafter. According to IMD, “Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions very likely to prevail in many places over Gangetic West Bengal, some parts of Odisha, Bihar today and in isolated pockets of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Jharkhand till tomorrow. The intensity will reduce thereafter with heat wave conditions in isolated pockets over the region during the subsequent 3 days.” Heat Wave to severe heatwave conditions are very likely to prevail in isolated pockets over Rayalaseema during the next 3 days and heat wave conditions during the subsequent 2 days, the IMD said. “Telangana, Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Tamil Nadu, Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat and Marathwada are also expected to witness heatwave conditions till 5th May,” it said. The maximum temperatures over Gangetic West Bengal, East Jharkhand, north Odisha and Rayalaseema are likely to be in the range of 44-47°C till 3rd May and decrease thereafter.

Warm night is very likely to prevail over Chhattisgarh from May 1-3; over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada during May 3-5 and over Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal today and tomorrow, the IMD said. The weather department also predicted heavy rainfall spell accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds will continue over Northeast India till tomorrow. “Light to moderate rainfall and snowfall accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching up to 50 kmph is very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura for the next 5 days with isolated hailstorm over Sikkim today,” the IMD said.Scattered light to moderate rainfall and snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning are very likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh from May 3 to 6 under the influence of fresh Western Disturbances, it said.

West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab and Rajasthan are also expected to witness isolated very light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning from May 4-6.Strong surface winds gusting up to 35 kmph are also very likely to prevail over Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi till May 3. The IMD has also forecast rainfall activity over south peninsular India with isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, South Interior Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe during May 5-8. On hot and humid weather, the IMD said, these conditions are very likely to prevail over Coast Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe from the next 5 days and West Assam today.
