Healthy Living is imperative for Media Professionals: Dr Ashok Kumar Panda

Bhubaneswar, July 17 (FN Bureau) Living a healthy life is indeed imperative for all human beings. It is said that disease free living is possible without foregoing all pleasures and joy of life. But it is important on our part to be sensitive and respond quickly to any deviation on our healthy way of living. We are given to understand that modern medicine is good for an emergency or an accident, but not for everyday life. The media fraternity is often seen flouting basic norms of life and indulging in a carefree schedule which obviously tells on their health. We all know the occupational hazards of a journalist but despite all odds let us not forget –health must be our utmost priority. The cause of disease is mostly attributed to inheritance and one’s lifestyle. Yes, obviously we cannot control our inheritance but we can control and monitor the way we live. Disease is caused by accumulation of toxins in our body. When these toxins accumulate beyond the tolerance limit we usually fall ill. But the greatest problem with us is – we take medicines and try to suppress it rather than eradicating it.

According to WHO, more than 60 per cent of related factors to individual health and quality of life are related to lifestyles. It is indeed unfortunate that most of us follow an unhealthy lifestyle. Obviously the consequence is –they encounter illness, disability and even death. Problems like metabolic diseases, joint and skeletal problems , cardio-vascular diseases, hypertension, overweight, violence and many such diseases can be caused by an unhealthy lifestyle. The relationship between lifestyle and health should be given due importance and considered in the right earnest. Today, there are wide changes in the way we live. Malnutrition, unhealthy diet, smoking, alcohol consuming ,drug abuse ,stress are some of the attributes of unhealthy life style. Even emerging new technologies within IT such as the internet and virtual communication networks, lead our world to a major challenge that threatens the physical and mental health of individuals. The challenges are the overuse and misuse of technology, that is affecting our daily life style and telling on our health. Though different schools of thought suggest differently, but if we can adhere to some very simple habits that will keep us fit and healthy.

Healthy diet is indeed of paramount importance for all of us. Quite often we indulge in junk food more so in the urban areas where the incidence of health issues are on a fast pace and cardiovascular diseases are on the rise. To keep our body fit we should practice pranayams, meditation and if this is not possible we may go for regular exercises or even brisk morning walks. Continuous exercise along with a healthy diet not only makes us healthy but also happy. Good sleep is indeed one of the positive indicators of a healthy mind and body. Health experts suggest that it is always advisable to retire to bed latest by 10 P.M. and rise early in the next morning. As far as possible we should sleep at least for 6 hours. Different studies reveal that sleep disorders can lead to several social, psychological, economical and health consequences. Do reschedule your work life to the extent possible so that you are able to meet your deadlines at the same time remain physically and mentally fit.

Recreation and leisure are definitely sub factors of lifestyle. With disorganized planning and unhealthy leisure , people run the risk of endangering their health. It is said that study is the exercise of the soul. Placing study as a factor in lifestyle will contribute to improve physical and mental health. Studies have revealed that the prevalence of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease is lower in educated people. No wonder journalists’ cognitive acumen are mostly high. There is no denying the fact that pandemic had given rise to uncertainties and new challenges but our confidence and healthy mind to a large measure could surmount the impediments on our way. Take care and lead a healthy and robust life…
