New Delhi, Oct 19 (FN Agency) India is set to achieve the milestone of 100 crore vaccination on Wednesday as the government is expected to carry out a special drive to achieve the magic figure, government sources told UNI. “Our expectation is to reach the milestone of 101 crore. A special drive will be carried out to achieve this feat,” a senior government official informed. The latest figures from the COVID-19 vaccination drive state that about 95 per cent of the eligible population has received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccines. This population is equivalent to cumulative population of countries in European Union and the United States.
However, India’s vaccination drive is mired with opportunism in achieving the desired targets instead of a planned exercise. The country achieved its highest single-day capacity so far on September 17 when more than 2.5 crore vaccines were administered. Besides, there have been around six to seven occasions when India achieved more the rare feat of inoculating over a crore doses in a day. The previous achievements shows the capacity of India which it chooses to accomplish only on select occasions, the trend suggests. Meanwhile, India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage crossed the landmark of 99 crore doses (99,08,97,514) administered on Tuesday wherein more than 37 lakh (37,92,737) shots were administered till 7 pm. The vaccination tally is expected to increase with the compilation of the final reports for the day by late tonight. India rolled out the world’s largest vaccination drive on January 16 this year.
