Global food crisis looms due to Russia-Ukraine war: Dr Shashi Tharoor

Thiruvananthapuram, March 20 (Representative) A global food crisis looms in the wake of Russia-Ukraine war, Senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha member Dr Shashi Tharoor said on Sunday. Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates that 20-30% of this year’s crop won’t be planted because of the war between Russia and Ukraine, Dr Tharoor, a former UN Under Secretary General, said. Pointing out that Ukraine and Russia account for nearly 30 percent of the world’s wheat, 17 percent of corn and half of sunflower seed oil exports, he said these have been drastically reduced by war.

Dr Tharoor tweeted that “#Ukraine & Russia account for nearly 30% of the world’s wheat, 17% of corn and over half of sunflower seed oil exports. These have been drastically reduced by war. Worse, @FAO estimates that 20-30% of this year’s crop won’t be planted because of war. A global food crisis looms.”
