Cyclonic storm likely to intensify in Bay of Bengal by May 6: IMD

New Delhi, May 5 (FN Agency) The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday warned that cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the Southeast Bay of Bengal by Saturday. “Under its influence, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the same region on May 7, which may develop into a depression by May 8”, the weather agency said. “The system is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm, moving nearly northwards towards the central Bay of Bengal”. The IMD said the details of its path and intensity would be provided after the formation of the low-pressure area. In view of the “cyclogenesis” over the Bay of Bengal, light to moderate rainfall is expected at most places with isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 7. “Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected during May 8-10, and the sea condition is likely to be rough on May 7 and very rough from May 8 onwards over the Southeast Bay of Bengal” it said.

The wind speed would gradually increase, becoming 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Andaman Sea on May 8 and 9. In view of the warning, the IMD advised the fishermen, small ships, boats, and trawlers not to venture into the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas from May 7 onwards and into the adjoining Central Bay of Bengal from May 9 onwards. The IMD has also urged people to remain alert and take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this time. In another event, a cyclonic Circulation lay over off coastal Tamil Nadu, and would bring heavy rainfall at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema on May 5 and over South Interior Karnataka & Kerala on May 8 and 9. The IMD said, no heat wave conditions are likely over any part of India during the next five days. “Maximum temperatures are very likely to increase and become near normal over Northwest India by May 7 and over remaining parts of the country by May 9,” it said.
