Coldwave intensifies as high reaches receive snowfall

Shimla, Nov 30 (FN Agency) The Coldwave intensified in the state as high reaches received fresh snowfall and many places on the Punjab-Haryana and Himachal border areas received heavy downpours in the foothills. District Administration Lahaul Spiti issued a traffic advisory that light to moderate snowfall would continue till this evening in the high reaches. The administration informed that snowfall also started in Rohtang Tunnel at the North Portal. The advisory issued to commuters said that the general public should avoid unnecessary travel. High reaches of Kinnaur, Shimla, Kangra, and Kullu registered intermittent snowfall, which dropped the mercury in the midhills and foothills; however, the temperature in the high reaches was below freezing or near freezing but normal.Shimla and its nearby hills were mainly dry till this afternoon, but light rain was also recorded in the evening.

Earlier on Thursday, this capital received light drizzling in the afternoon, and a foggy and cloudy sky reduced visibility to a great extent.People were waiting for the first spell of snowfall in the tourist resorts of Kufri, Manali, Dalhousie, and Narkanda. Una had 28 mm of rain, Dalhousie 19 mm, Bhuntar airport and Nangal ten mm each, Ghumroor (Kangra) and Chamba 9.5 mm, Kangra seven mm, Dharmshala 5 mm, and Sundernagar 3 mm. Dark clouds are hovering over the rest of the state, and IMD issued a yellow alert in ten districts of the state. The Indian Meteorological Department said that the minimum temperature slides by two to three degrees in the mid- and foot hills, and a few areas of Una had light rain.Due to mainly dry weather in the morning, Airflight to Shimla operated normally from Delhi.

District Administration Lahaul Spiti issued a yellow alert for Thursday; however, barring Keylong-Leh, part of National Highway No. 3 is already closed via Sarchu and Shankulu in the district. The minimum temperature was below normal in the mid-hills and foothills but normal in the high reaches; however, the average maximum temperature was five degrees below normal in the state.Minimum temperatures in Kalpa are 0.2 degrees, Keylong 1.5 degrees, Tourist Resort Narkanda 2.9 degrees, Kufri four degrees, Dalhousie five degrees, Manali six and Shimla 5.8 degrees, Solan 7.8, Mandi and Chamba ten, Una nine, Airport Jubberhati 9.9 , Dharmshala 9.2, Kangra 11.8 and Nahan 12 degrees.
