Bengaluru, May 16 (Representative) Doctors in a private hospital here successfully carried out robotic kidney transplants to give new lease of lives to a boy from distant Yemen and a young local software engineer, thereby carving out a path toward a brighter, healthier tomorrow for those battling life-threatening renal diseases. Ahmed, an 11-year-old boy from Yemen, had been entangled in a battle with Steroid Resistant Nephrotic Syndrome (SRNS) since he was but four years old. SRNS, a formidable adversary, causes the kidneys to leak copious amounts of protein despite the shield of steroid treatment, often leading to the grim territory of chronic kidney disease. By the time Ahmed arrived at Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road, his condition had escalated to stage five, demanding a kidney transplant for his survival. Amidst the anxiety and the medical complexities, a sliver of hope appeared. Ahmed’s parents, besieged by their health challenges, were unable to donate their kidneys. But in a heartwarming gesture of familial love, Ahmed’s aunt stepped forward to be the beacon of life he so desperately needed. Under the expert guidance of Dr. Mohan Keshavamurthy, a luminary in Urology, Uro-Oncology, Uro-Gynaecology, Andrology, Transplant, and Robotic Surgery, and Dr. Manjunath S, a dedicated Consultant-Nephrologist, a multidisciplinary team embarked on Ahmed’s life-saving journey. They performed a Robot-assisted Laparoscopic Live Related Renal Transplant Surgery, a minimally invasive procedure that also included the placement of a ureteral stent to ensure the seamless flow of urine.Ahmed’s recovery was nothing short of miraculous; just five days post-surgery, he was discharged, marking a triumphant chapter in his fight for health.
Across the bustling cityscape of Bengaluru, 34-year-old Chetan, a software engineer, faced a daunting challenge of his own. Diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease due to a solitary kidney, his prognosis was dire. Yet, in an extraordinary act of paternal love and courage, Chetan’s 74-year-old father, despite the shadows cast by age and health concerns, volunteered to donate his kidney.Following two weeks of dialysis, Chetan underwent a Robot-assisted Laparoscopic Live Related Renal Transplant Surgery, mirroring the procedure that had brought hope to young Ahmed. This intricate surgery, too, involved ureteral stenting, showcasing Chetan’s remarkable resilience. Just like Ahmed, Chetan was discharged five days after the surgery, his path to recovery illuminated by the cutting-edge technology and dedicated care he received. The success of these intricate surgeries at Fortis Hospital underscores the transformative potential of robotic surgery in kidney transplants. “Our primary goal is always the well-being and successful outcomes of our patients. In cases like those of Ahmed and Chetan, where precision and minimising risks are paramount, we opt for robotic surgery. This approach allows for smaller, more precise incisions, reducing trauma to surrounding tissues and facilitating faster recovery times,” Dr Keshavmurthy told UNI here.
Echoing thie sentiment, Dr. Manjunath S highlighted the unique challenges each case presented. “Ahmed’s genetic pre-disposition and the unavailability of his father as a donor posed significant hurdles. Meanwhile, Chetan’s father’s courage in the face of age-related health concerns required a multidisciplinary approach and innovative surgical techniques,” he reflected. Akshay Oleti, Business Head at Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, expressed heartfelt admiration for the medical team’s dedication. “We extend our heartfelt congratulations to our esteemed medical team for their dedication and expertise in successfully treating these patients. Our thoughts are with Ahmed and Chetan as they embark on their journey towards recovery. These cases exemplify the clinical excellence and cutting-edge technology that define us, reaffirming our commitment to providing the highest standards of care to our patients.” The successful robotic kidney transplant surgeries are more than just medical triumphs; they are stories of human resilience, unwavering hope, and the relentless pursuit of a healthier future.
