London, July 4 (FN Agency) A famous giant water lily, Victoria boliviana, named after Queen Victoria and held at Kew’s Royal Botanic Gardens for 177 years has been revealed as new species new to science.According to Sky News, scientists have confirmed the massive plant is a third type and said it is “one of the botanical wonders of the world”.For the first time, a new giant water lily has been discovered in over a century. It holds the record of being the largest in the world.
The plant has been named V Boliviana in honour of Bolivian research partners and one of the South American homes of the water lily, alongside the other two species: V Cruziana and V Amazonica, Sky Nes reported.Scientist Natalia Przelomska from Kew Gardens said that “in the face of a fast rate of biodiversity loss” the finding of new species “is a task of fundamental importance”.”We hope that our multidisciplinary framework might inspire other researchers who are seeking approaches to rapidly and robustly identify new species,” she added.
