London, Feb 16 (FN Agency) UK’s consumer price inflation reached in the 12 months to January 2022, the highest rate in the last 30 years, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported on Wednesday. “The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rose by 5.5 per cent in the 12 months to January 2022, up from 5.4 per cent to December 2021,” the ONS said, adding that the largest upward contributions to the change came from clothing, footwear, housing and household services, furniture and household goods.
Reacting to the report, Labour lawmaker and shadow chancellor of the Exchequer Abena Oppong-Asare blamed the Conservative government for the rising inflation. “The government has totally failed to get a grip on inflation,” she told Sky News broadcaster. The Bank of England has predicted that inflation could peak above 7 per cent by April, when a 54 per cent rise in energy bills and a 1.25 per cent tax increase come into place.
